The Hoekstra, Kime,Hobson Trio

The sound of the trio was born out of many years of playing jazz together in a more traditional style. Turning into a new direction, the Hoekstra Kime Hobson Trio explores the sense of space and harmonic symmetry that characterizes European jazz. The trio’s sound is lyrical yet robust and immediately accessable through their commitment to the melodic line.

In their interpretations, original compositions and improvisation the trio pays tribute to the melodies and structures of classical, jazz, folk, gospel and latin music.

The trio will be supported by guest artists: Sophie Buxton on viola and

The Aeolus Sax Quartet.

‘Electrifying’ – ‘extraordinarily animated’–‘featuring rare and natural charisma’….

These are words used to describe Fiona Pears, the beautiful and highly talented violinist and composer from Christchurch.

Describing her musical influences as Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, John Williams and Jean Luc Pointy, Pears performs Celtic, Classical, Tango, Jazz and Gypsy with equal ease, sometimes all in the same composition!

Together with her talented band, featuring Ian Tilley on piano, Mike Ferrar on guitar and Peter Fleming on double bass, Fiona will perform music from her own exciting compositions, including brand new pieces from the latest CD. Expect a fiery melting pot of flavours - and a thrilling, visually stunning experience.

New Zealand born and now dividing her time between London and this country, Fiona has performed and recorded with artists such as Dave Dobbyn, Hayley Westenra, Bic Runga, and has opened for Tony Bennett, Ottmar Liebert and ‘the clown prince of Denmark’, the late Victor Borge. Personal highlights include appearing at Ronnie Scott’s world famous jazz club in London and performing her own compositions and arrangements with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

Fiona has released two DVDs and four CDs to date.  This concert is to celebrate the release of her fifth studio album ‘Feeling’.
